Zhejiang University is a national key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education and among the first batch of ‘double first-class’ universities in China. Nearly one hundred undergraduate majors are offered by colleges and departments affiliated with the seven faculties of science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, information technology, humanities, and social sciences. With a program length of 4-6 academic years, undergraduate programs are instructed in Chinese generally, while some English-taught programs are also available. Graduates fulfilling all the degree requirements will be awarded the bachelor’s degree.

1. General Requirements

  • 1.1 Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and valid foreign passport holders.
  • 1.2 Under the age of 25. Applicants must have graduated from high school (Those who provide a pre-graduation certificate or student status certificate at application MUST provide, the graduation certificate no later than registration).
  • 1.3 With proper moral conduct, in good health with no infectious disease or any physical or mental diseases that may affect the normal study.

2. Requirements for Citizenship

Requirements of the regulations set in Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met(Link).

  • Applicants who have given up their original Chinese citizenship (including residents in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan)and become foreign citizens, must acquire foreign citizenship before April 30, 2020, and must have lived abroad more than 2 years from April 30, 2020, to April 30, 2024 (more than 9 months of residence abroad per year can be considered as one year, taking entry and exit stamps as evidence).
  • If the applicant has acquired foreign citizenship automatically at the time of birth in a foreign country, whose parents were both Chinese citizens, or one of the parents was a Chinese citizen, the parent’s (with Chinese citizenship) permanent resident in a foreign country should be obtained prior to the birth of the applicant. Applicants must have lived abroad for more than 2 years from April 30, 2020, to April 30, 2024 (more than 9 months of residence abroad per year can be considered as one year, taking entry and exit stamps as evidence).

 Note: If the applicant is concluded to have Chinese citizenship by the Chinese public security department after application, admission, or enrollment, the applicant will be disqualified from application, admission or enrollment or withdrawal from school will be required.

3. Language Proficiency Requirements

  • 3.1  Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must have an HSK certificate. Specific HSK requirements can be found in the catalog of Chinese-taught undergraduate programs. Applicants whose compulsory courses were taught in Chinese during secondary education (junior and senior high school) can be exempt from submitting an HSK certificate.
  • 3.2 There are no Chinese language proficiency requirements for the applicants of English-taught programs. If applicants’ native language is not English, they should provide a score report on the English language test (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS/OTHER).

Applicants must log in to the Online Application System for International Students of Zhejiang University(Link), fill in clearly, and upload the original or notarized scanned copies of the following materials as required.

  • A photocopy of the passport front page. The passport should be valid before December 31, 2024.
  • Senior high school diploma. Current high school students shall provide an official pre-graduation certificate. The original or notarized copy of the high school graduation certificate must be submitted no later than registration.
  • Academic transcripts for all the courses in senior high school.
  • Language proficiency certificates.
  • Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must provide a photocopy of HSK certificate.  
  • Applicants for English-taught programs must provide a grade report of TOEFL or IELTS test, or other proof which can reflect the applicants’ English proficiency. (Not required for English native speakers)
  • Two recommendation letters from high school teachers. (Teachers’ signature, contact phone number, and email address must be put on the letter.)
  • Personal statement, in Chinese or English, should include study experience, reasons for application, and personal strengths. Less than 800 words.
  • Award-winning Certificates related to academic courses during your senior high school period. (If applicable)
  • Applicants who have given up their original Chinese citizenship and become foreign citizens should provide:
    • Documents certifying the cancellation of Chinese citizenship
    • Documents certifying the cancellation of Chinese household registration
    • Documents certifying the acquirement of foreign citizenship.
    • Exit and Entry Record on passport, from April 30, 2020 to April 30, 2024.
  • Applicants who have acquired foreign citizenship automatically at the time of birth in a foreign country, whose parents were both Chinese citizens, or one of the parents was a Chinese citizen should provide:
    • Documents certifying acquiring foreign citizenship at the time of birth,
    • Documents certifying the parent’s (with Chinese citizenship) permanent residence in foreign country before the birth of the applicant.
    • Exit and Entry Record on passport, from April 30, 2020, to April 30, 2024.
  • Applicants under the age of 18 (by September 1st, 2024) should submit:
    • Letter of Guardian Guarantee(Download)and the guardian must be an adult living in Hangzhou.
    • A notarized copy of the Guardianship Authorization from the applicant’s parents.

Notes:

  • Results of international standard tests (e.g. SAT/IB/GCE A-LEVEL/ACT/STPM/GED/UEC/OTHER) or university entrance exams of the applicant’s country are accepted. It is strongly recommended to provide the student’s relative ranking or the percentile in the school if the applicant can only submit the test scores from the school.
  • The above application materials must be in Chinese or English, and notarized copies of translations must be provided for texts in other languages.
  • Please do NOT post the hard copies of the application materials or send them by email. Application materials sent by post or email will NOT be reviewed and processed.
  • Zhejiang University may ask the applicants to submit supplementary materials or take a video interview if necessary.
  • Students are enrolled on the basis of competitive selection according to their academic performance in senior high school, language proficiency and performance in the interview,etc. The university will determine the name list of preliminary admission in different batches according to the application received. Applicants can also log on the Online Application System (Link) to track the admission process.
  • Applicants who receive the Pre-Admission Notice should prepay the first-year tuition fee on the Online Application System within the specific time period stated on the Notice. If the applicant is not able to make the online payment due to certain reasons, then one MUST pay the tuition fee to the University’s Bank Account(Link), and upload the remittance letter to the System. The pre-admission will be canceled if applicants fail to prepay the first-year tuition fee within the stated time period.
  • Admission Notice can be downloaded from the Online Application System(Link) from the end of June 2024. The download link of the electronic Confirmation Form for Study in China (for visa)will be sent to the permanent email address filled in the application system by the applicant.

Notes:

  • When wiring tuition fees to the university bank account, you must fill in the application serial number, and applicant’s name.
  • The university would only reserve study places for students who have paid the tuition for the first academic year in advance. If students later, for personal reasons, give up schooling or apply for withdrawal procedures after registration, resulting in a vacancy in the school’s enrollment, prepaid tuition fees for the first academic year will NOT be refunded.
  • For the admitted students who are disqualified by the university as they fail to meet the school’s registration requirements, the prepaid tuition fee will NOT be refunded.
  • The selection process is subject to change according to the policy of the superior department.

1. Undergraduate programs at Zhejiang University usually start in late August or early September every year. For exact registration dates, please refer to the Admission Notice.

2. Admitted applicants should register with the university strictly according to the time specified in the admission notice. The original graduation certificate and original language proficiency certificate will be checked upon registration. Those who fail to provide the original copies will be disqualified from enrollment.

Fee: 800 RMB yuan/academic year

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education, international students who study for one semester or longer must purchase comprehensive medical insurance in mainland China as a necessary requirement for their registration for the new semester.

Students who fail to purchase the comprehensive medical insurance as required will NOT be registered by the university.

Information related to purchasing insurance will be notified in detail before registration. The admitted students should handle insurance affairs strictly according to the instructions on the notice.
